In Other News: Resigning Our CrossFit Affiliation
As of next week (12/12/2010) Emergent Fitness will no longer be a CrossFit Affiliate. If you are a member of EmerFit you should have already received our December 2010 Newsletter which outlines some of the reasons for this change. If you are one of our many friends in the broader CrossFit community you will likely receive an email from us about our future plans and reasons for this change. Other interested parties will find some details below.

We are honored to have been a CrossFit affiliate for over 5 years and to have been one of the first 100 affiliates (number 54, I think). However, over time we have seen our methods drift from those advocated by CrossFit.com and the Level 1 certifications. We also have found that the CrossFit brand tends to limit what people think we do at EmerFit. The CrossFit method is a valuable tool when used in the right situation but as the saying goes “when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” There are many ways of training that utilize the same equipment and some of the same methods of as CrossFit but are not officially “CrossFit”. We also find that many people do not understand that CrossFit is not a franchise. Finally, we never felt like some of the issues that lead to some other de-affiliations were ever addressed properly by CrossFit Inc. (yes, we mean the Robb Wolf, Greg Everett, Whole 9, and even Grey Skull incidents.)

Other than some changes to the names of our services and classes this change will result in no immediate change to our business, program, or coaching. If you have been around EmerFit for a while this change is probably not much of a surprise. Any questions regarding this change can be directed to EmerFit Founder and Head Coach Chris Brown via email or using our Contact page. Chris is happy to discuss the ins and outs of this decision. Interested members might also consider attending next week’s “Program Design 101: Planning for 2011” seminar as this topic we be included in the presented materials.

We are very appreciative of our customer’s past and current support of Emergent Fitness. We hope you will trust in our decision to make this change and continue to support us in the future. It is our goal to empower you through safe, effective, and efficient training. As mentioned above, this change in affiliation will result in minimal to no change to our existing programs, services, and operations.

Finally, as usual please keep all comments in response to this post respectful and courteous.

That is a cool picture, if I do say so myself.

As for the changes, I am more excited to be a part of Emerfit now as I was the first day I walked in the door…super excited to see what the future holds for the Emerfit community. Keep up the good work guys (and Kristi)!

Chris and Crew, in thinking about the changes that are coming, the question I have for you is; “What is Emerfit?” Now that your brand is truely independent, how do you explain what Emerfit is to someone looking for a gym?

  4. Dougie says:

    hey guys-

To me, these changes just tell me how dedicated you are to not only the people that train at the gym, but also to your own education as coaches. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Crossfit, but different goals require different training programs.

I’ve made huge strides in my own training and sport in the past few years. It all started with the solid foundational work and training that I received at Emerfit. The fact that you welcome me back and still work closely with me on my athletic development every time I return from a hard season of travel and climbing means more to me than you know.

I think the world of everyone at the gym and am very psyched to see what the changes bring. If past history is any indication, great things are coming.

    thank you

PS – if anybody is interested in the results that hard work can bring, check out the coldfear blog and the “Regulators” series of videos for what we have been up to so far this season.
