“Mixed Eating Company”

Amy Kubal has a post over at robbwolf.com entitled “Don’t Be ‘That Guy’ (or Gal)…” that might promote some levity amongst those of us that are prone to get a little too excited about our way of eating, our training, or even our gym. Our friends at Whole 9 have written an “elevator pitch” about Paleo nutrition that is succinct and non-confrontational. Yet, even that can be a bit much in mixed company, though it works great with someone who is ready and wants to listen.

Real exercise, or even training, and real food works so well for us that its easy to get on our soap boxes. It can also be easy to turn these maters into moral issues, proclaiming that one diet/training-method/exercise is right and another is wrong. In my opinion that is a mistake. Education, choice, and personal responsibility are better routes to self-improvement and for helping others. Not to mention that when we try to “help” someone else we often don’t know what else is going on in their life. Food and exercise are common coping mechanisms for a whole slew of other issues. Often those other issues need to be addressed before or at the same time as issues of food and exercise. Some of you might remember that surprising study we linked to last year about obesity being both a problem and a solution.

For many of us this is probably a timely topic: The holidays are a time of social eating and those of us that try to eat “clean” through the season often find we are asked to explain ourselves. Time to practice your elevator speech and maybe a little humility.
